Video Remote Interpreting Service

We are pleased to announce that Deaf Communication by Innovation (DCI) is now providing Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) service, in addition to its existing services: community interpreting, captioning, video production, ASL instruction and consulting.

Our goal, as always, is to employ the latest technology to improve communication between deaf, hard of hearing and hearing individuals. VRI certainly meets this criteria. Using VRI, two or more people, deaf and hearing, can meet face to face while a remote interpreter translates using special software and the Internet to connect a computer at the meeting site with the interpreter at a different location. VRI is most suitable for impromptu business and organization meetings as well as emergency situation when a live interpreter is not available. It is not government funded like VRS. Rather, VRI is billed to the user based on minutes used.

While VRI cannot replace the need for a live interpreter, it is especially appropriate for:

  • Rural areas where there may be a lack of qualified interpreters,
  • Short follow-up medical appointments,
  • Emergency room prep-prior to the arrival of a "live" interpreter,
  • Brief (unscheduled) meetings with co-workers, staff and employees,
  • Short walk-in appointments,
  • Brief (unscheduled) meetings in educational settings with students-also with teachers or parents (not IEP),
  • The need for a scheduled interpreter has not been filled and there is critical information that needs to be communicated,
  • And many more!

If you are interested in exploring the many advantages of VRI, please feel free to contact us to set up a demonstration.
